Story:
Don purchased the original RS/SS 350 in 1983 for the sum of $2,500.  The first thing on his agenda was to install a 468 Chevy big block and turbo 400 transmission.  It was raced primarily at Green Valley Raceway and ran fair by today’s standards at 11.30.  When Green Valley closed in 1985 the car was raced at the Texas Motorplex. That spring, the car began running 10.50’s with the addition of a new intake, carb and tubbed back half.  In 1988 Don took up crew chief duties to allow both of his sons to drive in competition. Both cars were converted to small blocks and power glides for ease of maintenance and parts.  Don Jr. and David bracket raced every weekend for approximately 10 years before it became too much of a time burden.  Don Jr. had the most success in the Camaro, winning his bracket, track championship, and driver of the year accolades in his first year in points.  He always finished in the top ten in his class including two runner-ups and a third.  In addition, he wheeled the Camaro to the Division 4 (5 state) Divisional Championship in 1991 as well as two more semi-final appearances in later bracket finals.  In 2000, Don Sr. took over the driving duties, and again has had success.  The car is currently fitted with a 434 ci small block and power glide with the ability to run in the low 10’s or high 9’s.  Don Sr. plans to sell the car on or before the end of this year and retire his role in active bracket racing.  He plans to enjoy his street cars and do a little traveling in the meantime.  It has been a wonderful car and has given the Cavers many wonderful memories.
