February 2005 Feature Car

George shares the story of his 1969 COPO:

How did you acquire the car? “I new it was going to be auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson in 1997. I saw it in the paddock the day before it went on the block. It had undergone a complete restoration and was nearly flawless. I ran into the owner and tried to negotiate a price before the car went up, to save us both the commissions. He laughed at my offer, saying he was going to get twice the amount when the car sold the next day. So, the next afternoon the car went to auction at “no reserve”. I waited to see what the bidding was going to top out at, but no one seemed interested in the car. As the bidding slowed, I raised my hand and nobody tried to outbid me. I won the bid at a price equal to what I had offered the owner the previous day. I guess it was my lucky day!

What would you have done differently?
“Add an a/c! It is almost unbearable to drive in the summer, but it is my favorite car of all time, and very special, so it’s worth it.
