March 2005 Feature Car

Tom shares the story of his 1969 SS 396 Camaro:

What are the main strengths of this car?
This car was built to be versatile. It looks original enough to do well at car shows, but has upgrades to make it more interesting to drive. The engine is dressed as a 396/375 unit, but is really a 454 that gives a little more horsepower and a bunch of torque. The Muncie was upgraded to a Tremec 3550, after questioning the happy car owners Bill Roy and Rodney Moore. The 0.67 overdrive makes a 3.73 rear-end into solid cruising or touring hardware.

How did you acquire the car?
I searched on traderonline.com twice a day for about three months. I called the day the ad was placed and startled the seller, in that he thought the car was under priced. He said that he promised a friend the first chance, so it took almost a month to close the deal. The car was located in the Washington, DC area and my friends warned me that it was rusty territory for cars. There was a heavy accumulation of snow when I arrived in my Z71 and trailer. When I left, the snow was melting and my new car was getting splashed with salt spray as I drove through DC. I was a nervous wreck! I’ve owned the car for two years. It’s been a good car. It was a pleasant ride to the Hill Country, but I couldn’t convince my wife to go without a/c.

Special thanks to: Rodney of Car Craft has given the most support. He has flywheel stories that will make you cringe.
