January 2006 Feature Car

Shawn shares the story of his 1968 Camaro:

How did you acquire the car?
I got the car from Gary Wilbanks’ wrecking yard as a stripped down shell except for the deck lid and back glass. After I drug it onto my trailer, I went around the junkyard pulling parts to build it: sub-frame here, look there’s a door over there, oh I’ll need a left door and there’s another part I need over there, and so on.

Tell us about your car and any enhancements:
I started working on the car in 1996 and finished it in 1999. ”Shawn built his Camaro to go real fast at the races.” Besides the bodywork, I built the engine myself, moved the battery to the trunk with the fuel cell, then added a full roll cage and
sub-frame connectors. Some of the go-fast goodies that propel me to mid 10-second rides include ported 990 Square port heads, Lunati pro mod rods, Scat crank, Probe forged pistons squeezing out 12.5:1 compression, solid roller Comp cam 272/280@.050, Titan oil pump, and a complete MSD Ignition. I’ve decided to mini tub the rear so I can run with
bigger slicks hoping for even quicker time slips. Its been
rumored that Shawn is “steering challenged” because his car jumps off the line with the front wheels sky high in first gear, when he comes back to earth is using only the driver’s side tire in second and third, and trying to find his own lane going through the traps in forth!
